How to Start Recovery Mode on the POS
Prerequisite: You will need a keyboard plugged in to your station for this.
Step 1
Power station off manually by tapping the power button in the top left hand corner, then tapping Shutdown Computer. If that isn’t an option, try holding down the power button on the bottom left hand area of the screen until the screen goes blank.
Step 2
After the SmartTab logo from the screen turns off. Turn the station back on by pressing the same button.
Step 3
Tap the down arrow key repeatedly on the keyboard while the station is turning back on until you see a black and white screen that says “GNU GRUB” at the top of the screen:

Select Advanced Options for Ubuntu with the arrow keys, and press enter. You should then see an option for (recovery mode). Use the arrow keys to select the (recovery mode) option, and press enter.
When the recovery menu appears on the screen, you will see several options, but one is for repairing broken packages. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the repair broken package option and press
Enter
to start the repair process.Step 6: Repair broken packages
Resume
option from the recovery menu and press F
to fix any detected errors. The screen may look something like this:Follow any on-screen instructions to complete the repair process.

How to Start Recovery Mode on the Main Station (Dell)
Prerequisite: A keyboard must be plugged into the Main station.
Step 1: Power off the station
- Power off the Main Station by using a mouse and clicking the power button in the top left hand corner, then tapping Shutdown Computer. You can also press the windows button on a keyboard, and then clicking on “Leave” and then “Shutdown”.
- If the computer is frozen and this is not an option, manually power off the main station by holding down the power button until the LED turns off, located on the front of the station itself:
Step 2: Power the Station while Tapping Down Arrow Key
- Wait for the SmartTab logo to disappear from the screen and the screen to go blank
- Once the screen has turned off, wait for 10 seconds, and plug in a keyboard.
- Before pressing the power button, tap the down arrow key on the keyboard repeatedly.
- Press the power button while still tapping the down arrow key on your keyboard
Step 3: Enter the recovery mode
- As the station reboots you should see a black and white screen showing “GNU GRUB” at the top of the screen, with the options Ubuntu, Advanced Options for Ubuntu, and System Setup. The screen should look like this:
- Select Advanced Options for Ubuntu, and on the next screen you should see an option for (recovery mode). Use the arrow keys to select the option with (recovery mode) and hit Enter. It should look something like this:
Step 4: Select recovery options
- When the recovery menu appears on the screen, you will see several options, but one is for repairing broken packages. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the repair broken package option and press
Enter
to start the repair process. - The following options will be available: Resume, Clean, Fail Safe, Ffck Check All Files, Grub, Network, Root, and System Summary.
- Resume: Resume normal booting process.
- Clean: Clean up unnecessary files to free up disk space.
- Fail Safe: Boot into a fail-safe mode.
- Ffck Check All Files: Check and repair file system errors. (This is the Repair Option)
- Grub: Update the GRUB bootloader.
- Network: Enable networking.
- Root: Drop into a root shell prompt for manual commands.
- System Summary: Display a summary of the system’s status.
- You may also see a screen stating “Continuing will remount your / filesystem. Use the arrow key to Select Yes and hit enter:
Step 5: Repair broken packages
- Once it’s done, you’ll return to the same recovery menu.
- Select the
Resume
option from the recovery menu and pressF
to fix any detected errors. The screen should look something like this:
- Follow any on-screen instructions to complete the repair process.
Step 6: Resume normal operations
- After the repair process is complete, the station should resume normal booting. Verify that the broken packages have been successfully repaired by checking the functionality of the Main Station system.
