How Do I Troubleshoot An Unresponsive Card Reader?

iPad General guidelines: To address an unresponsive card reader on the iPad/vault units first make sure the unit is fully charged

Step 1

Open and log into POS vault

Step 2

Test chip reader to start tab. If the first card is unresponsive try another brand credit card. (visa, MC, Amex, discover)

Step 3

If one brand is not working and the others are it more than likely is the EMV/capk files. To address that please contact SmartTAB for a Magtek app update

Step 4

If none of the cards work then we need to open up the vault case.

Step 5

Power off the iPad

Step 6

Remove back screws from the vault case and make sure the power micro c is plugged into the chip reader

Step 7

If micro c is plugged in then make sure the lightning port is stable (piece that actually attaches to the iPad)

Station General guidelines: To address an unresponsive card reader on the station first make sure the station is plugged into power.

Step 8

Open and log into the POS and make sure the green light is on for the chip reader. If not jump to step 5

Step 9

Test chip reader to start tab. If the first card is unresponsive try another brand credit card. (Visa, MC, Amex, Disc)

Step 10

If one brand is not working please reference “flash Magtek stations”

Step 11

If none of the cards are working try a hard reset of the station. Power off the station, wait 30 sec and power the station back on.

Step 12

If the reader is still unresponsive, open the port under the station by removing the one screw. Check to see that the chip reader USB is plugged into the proper 3.0 USB port (the chip reader must be plugged into a USB port labeled 3.0) under the station and the micro c is plugged into the actual chip reader

Step 13

If plugged in and no green light appears on the chip reader it may be fixed by replacing the micro c on the station

Step 14

Replace the chip reader. First locate the 2 screws holding the unit in place. Behind the card swipe. Remove the 2 screws from behind the chip reader. Unplug the micro c and remove the chip reader

Step 15

Replace with new chip reader, attach micro c cord, make sure the green light is on and screw the chip reader into place with the two screws

Step 16

Restart the station

Step 17

Log into POS and Test card reader and hopefully great success
